Hands-on training for safer communities

At Chesapeake Utilities, safety is our top priority. From proper service connection to proactive emergency response, we always carefully follow protocol. That’s why we built Safety Town, a two-acre training center located on the Energy Lane Campus in Dover, Delaware.

The facility features training classrooms, equipment storage and shed-style homes built by Polytech High School students. These structures simulate the residential settings where our employees work every day.

The goal is to provide a free hands-on training for our employees, first responders and community partners so they’re prepared for situations before they encounter them in a real-world setting.

Who Does Safety Town Serve?

Safety Town supports the safety of our team, first responders and the greater community.

Operations teams use the facility to strengthen technical skills, reinforce safety practices and prepare for emergency situations they may face in the field.

First responders—including fire, EMS and law enforcement—train at Safety Town to improve coordination, align response procedures and build strong working relationships before emergencies happen. Since opening, Safety Town has conducted more than 500 training sessions with fire, EMS and law enforcement teams.

All of these efforts work collectively to ensure we protect you, your family and the communities we proudly serve.

Why Safety Training is Important

Proactively learning about natural gas and the equipment used to deliver it is more effective than training during an emergency. It gives trainees the ability to process the information, develop and practice skills and ask questions without the pressure of a real-time issue.

Additionally, the training program helps develop critical partnerships between energy professionals and emergency responders. It allows both sides to build rapport, better understand their roles and where they intersect.

By providing real-life training experiences, our Safety Town facilities ensure our teams are better equipped to handle emergency situations, maintain infrastructure and perform their jobs safely and efficiently.

The Safety Town training program is available to:

  • First responders
  • Other community partners

Middle school and high school groups can also schedule an educational tour of our Safety Town location in Dover.
